Photo of a skyscraper in Bangkok (A) which stands out in the background (courtesy of B. Ungureanu). This building, modelled by a concrete pillar of height 300 m and square cross section 60 m × 60 m, atop a stress-free plate of thickness 40 m and infinite extent in the horizontal plane (modelled with elastic PMLs) should interact with an incoming seismic wave at 10 Hz according to a COMSOL simulation (B), with two smaller buildings placed in front being strongly impacted by the back reflection from the taller one. (C) and (D) simulations show the difference of the propagation of body waves considering 3 identical buildings or 10 buildings with height varying linearly from 10 m to 100 m, of square cross section 20 m × 20 m, with centre to centre spacing of 40 m along the propagation path, which behave like a wave guide path. These simulations exemplify the richness of site-city interactions.
