The central element has a free space path delay of φ0. The adjacent elements have additional free space path delays of φ1 and φ2. By rotating the corresponding unit cells with phase delays of −φ1 and −φ2, the path delays can be compensated and the transmitted waves from each unit cell will arrive at the focal spot in phase.
